One of the questions I’m most often asked as a newborn photographer is “When is the best time to book a newborn photoshoot? Should I just contact you once my baby is born?”

It is understandable that it seems a good idea to wait until your baby is born to book your newborn photoshoot. After all, there’s no way to know exactly when he or she will arrive, and babies are considered to be born full term any time from 37 to 42 weeks – that’s a pretty big window within which to make an appointment!

However, I would always recommend booking in well before birth to ensure you don’t miss out on those precious newborn images. I take bookings any time during pregnancy, with most clients preferring to book in any time after their 20 week scan.

Why is it best to book a newborn photoshoot before birth?

To get those perfect shots of your baby when they’re brand new, your newborn photoshoot needs to take place within the first 3 weeks of life – ideally within the first 2 weeks. This is because at this very early age your baby will still be very sleepy and comfortable in the lovely curled up poses typical of newborn photography.

My diary often books up in advance as I only take on a limited number of shoots in a week. Although I always feel terrible to have to turn away clients, I often have no immediate availability to photograph babies who have already arrived while they are still under 3 weeks old. Therefore, the best time to book your newborn photoshoot is soon after your 20 week scan. That way you can relax, safe in the knowledge that you’re guaranteed a slot while your baby is still in the ‘newborn’ window.

I don’t know exactly when my baby will be born, what’s the booking process?

Of course, it’s impossible to know exactly when your baby will arrive, so the process is as follows:

  1. Having looked at my package brochures, you decide you’d like to book me for your newborn photoshoot and send the deposit. This secures your shoot in my diary within the first two weeks of the birth of your baby, whether they arrive early*, late or right on time.
  2. We pencil in a date based on your due date, typically around a week to 10 days after.
  3. The actual date for your newborn session is only decided once your baby is arrived and you’re all settled at home. I will wait patiently to hear from you that you’re ready for your shoot.

*For babies who are born prematurely, the session will take place somewhere around the time of their due date and do not have to take place within three weeks of birth.

My baby has already arrived – is it too late to book a newborn photography session?

Not always! Although it may be true that I often have no immediate availability, the unpredictable nature of birth dates means I do sometimes have shoots available at short notice. If your baby has already arrived please contact me as soon as possible to see if I have a slot available.

If I can’t fit you in for a newborn shoot, there are a couple of other options available for you. You may be interested in one of my First Smiles shoots, aimed at babies around 8-12 weeks old, or you may like the idea of an in-home baby photoshoot. The in-home shoots are very relaxed and unposed, so can take place at any age.
